I tune the reso first and generally I go for 150 Hz or so at the reso lugs. I then flip the drum over and tune the batter to 110 Hz range at the lugs.

Most of my toms are deep; 9x8, 9x10, 10x12, 12x13 rack toms, late 80's Ludwig Classic. I mostly use the 10 and/or 12 they both can be tuned low or high with a nice robust sound especially with regular Coated Ambassadors.

I personally like tuning to shells for the most resonance and sustain that I can get from my drums. I'm very critical with the way my kits sound and each head is in-tune with itself.
